Weight is a quality shared by all weapons that limits how much you can carry. By default, you can carry up to 15 "blocks" of weight. One block of weight is always used to represent hand grenades (whether or not you have any equipped). The support specialist perk has bonus carrying capacity.

Increasing your total carried weight also reduces your movement speed, as shown below.

Movement speed calculation

The base movement speed is 200 Unreal units per second (about 8.52 miles per hour) and is affected by a few factors in a specific order and fashion, detailed below.

  1. Movement speed is multiplied by a factor that decreases to 70% over the course of missing 100% of your health (e.g. at 90 health the multiplier is 97%; at 50 health, 85%; at 1 health, 70.3%).
  2. Movement speed is multiplied by a factor that decreases to 87% over the course of carrying 100% of your weight capacity (e.g. carrying 1/15 blocks the multiplier is ~99.13%; at 7/15 blocks, ~93.93%; at 15/15 blocks, 87%; at 24/24, also 87%).
  3. If wielding a melee weapon (excluding the chainsaw and buzzsaw bow), movement speed increases by 40, reduced by 2 times the wielded weapon's weight (e.g. knife is 0, katana is −6, claymore is −10).
    • The berserker has a larger flat bonus; from level 0 to level 6 the respective bonuses are 50, 60, 70, 80, 80, 80, 100.
  4. Field medics, from level 0 to level 6, multiply movement speed respectively by 100%, 100%, 105%, 110%, 115%, 120%, 125%.
Example: A level 3 berserker at 90 health, 4/15 blocks, wielding a katana has (200 × 97% × 96.53%) + 80 − (2 × 3) = 261.27 movement speed.
Example: A level 2 field medic at 100 health, 1/15 blocks, wielding a knife has ((200 × 100% × 99.13%) + 40 − (2 × 0)) × 105% = 250.18 movement speed.

The melee speed bonus described in-game for the berserker is misleading; technically speaking, the +40 movement speed gained from wielding a melee weapon is a +20% bonus of the base movement speed; the berserker perk increases this bonus to 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%, or 50% (as indicated in its description). This means the overall speed increase is usually less than indicated (but because it's a flat bonus, the overall increase is more pronounced if the movement speed has been decreased from health loss or heavy weight).
